Trump vows to work for Israeli-Palestinian peace

Palestinians play cards at a coffee shop as a television broadcasts a statement in Washington between President Donald Trump with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Wednesday, May 3, 2017.

Despite what many experts see as a long-shot bid, Trump told Abbas: "I will do whatever is necessary".

The president did not elaborate on any new policies or timetables to revive the long-stalled negotiations, and stopped short of explicitly endorsing a two-state solution. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn't outlined an alternative demarcation. Netanyahu stressed that he hopes Trump's meeting with Abbas will "achieve a change" that will "allow Israelis to pursue genuine peace".

Trump's promise to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, strongly opposed by Palestinians, has been shifted to the back burner, and he has asked Netanyahu to put unspecified limits on settlement activity.

The US leader expressed his conviction that a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace was within reach. Most Israelis want all of Jerusalem as their capital and reject a full return to 1967 borderlines as a threat to their security.

"I affirm to you that you are raising our youth, our children, our grandchildren on a culture of peace", Abbas said.

This comes in marked contrast to the previous administration of President Barack Obama, who stated on several occasions that the main obstacles to an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement wee the Jews living in Judea and Samaria.

"The Palestinian inmates are victims of Israel's control of the West Bank".

He called on Israel to recognise Palestinian independence just as Palestinians recognise the state of Israel.

Mr. Abbas insisted that Palestinians were not preaching hatred.

After their meeting, President Trump and President Abbas held a joint press conference, at which the U.S. president said, " "there can not be lasting peace unless the Palestinian leaders speak in a unified voice against incitement to violence and hate".

President Donald Trump is moving forward with his plans to broker the ultimate deal: peace in the Middle East.

Trump has met with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (mahk-MOOD' ah-BAHS') in the Oval Office, and the president says he'd "love to be a mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator" between the two sides.

Al-Rimawi remarked on the Palestinian security services violations against the journalists explaining that a year ago there were 383 violations of media freedoms in the Palestinian territories, 35 per cent were committed by the Palestinian security forces in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

One of the most devastating and heartbreaking dilemmas that spilt its negative externalities across the globe in the last century has been the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum accused Abbas of siding with Israel in trying to punish Hamas. Hamas has dismissed Abbas's strategy of negotiations as a waste of time and said he does not represent the Palestinians.
