After my return to Feyenoord, I had two wonderful years with the league title this season as absolute highlight.

Former Netherlands and Liverpool striker, Dirk Kuyt has officially announced his retirement from football.

Liverpool fans applauded the former Fenerbahce and FC Utrecht forward for his time with the Reds, after his current side announced his news.

His three year period in Turkey saw him make nearly 100 league appearances for Fenerbache, before returning to Feyenoord to finish his career. "All my dreams have come true".

Technical director Martin van Geel says "we are unbelievably grateful to Dirk for what he has meant to Feyenoord for the last two years". "With his attitude, professionalism and passion, he has added a huge amount in the changing room, on the field and off it".

On Sunday, Kuyt stood in front of crowds in Rotterdam and said that Feyenoord's title victory was "the best moment of his life".

"We are therefore very pleased that we can keep someone with his experience and attitude at the club".

Speaking to Feyenoord.com, Kuyt said: "Throughout my career I have always followed my heart when taking decisions and that goes for this one too. I will tutor Dirk and I could easily imagine him taking over from me in due course". Kuyt played an important role in winning the Super League Cup (2013-2014), the Turkish Cup (2012-2013) and the Turkish Super Cup (2014) as well as in the UEFA Europa League semi-final run (2012-2013) during his 3 seasons in Turkey.

At worldwide level, Kuyt represented his country on 104 occasions, scoring 24 times, while he featured at three World Cups and two European Championships.

Kuyt was still able to make a major impact in the latter stages of his career, as shown by the fact that he scored eleven goals and created 38 chances in the Eredivisie this season.
