Sharapova misses out on French Open wild card after doping

Sharapova 26 April tournament in Stuttgart resumed her career after a 15-month pause, associated with the delivery of a positive doping samples for Meldonium and the subsequent long-term suspension.

Maria Sharapova insists she will "rise up again" after being snubbed by the French Tennis Federation as a wild-card entrant at the French Open.

"I read the results of several polls and I could see that about two-thirds were in favour of Maria being granted a wild card, of course I felt some pressure", he said.

Former player Guy Forget, now the French Open tournament director, has been canvassing opinion from within the sport as to what the reaction would be should Sharapova receive a wildcard. But those two titles she (won) them according to the rules. Ultimately, though, he said he determined, "It's my responsibility, it's my mission, to protect the game and protect the high standards of the game".

Sharapova, who has titles at all four majors, won at Roland Garros in 2012 and 2014.

Sharapova needed to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Open to qualify for Wimbledon's main draw but retired in the second round on Tuesday when leading Lucic-Baroni 4-6 6-3 2-1.

As a Grand Slam, the French Open is perhaps less in need of extra publicity than a regular Tour event, its sponsorship and advance ticket sales largely unaffected by the presence of an individual player.

The supplement had previously been allowed for years, and Sharapova said she overlooked announcements by WADA that it had been added to the ban list on January 1, 2016.

"Wildcards are offered at tournaments' sole discretion", WTA CEO Steve Simon said.

Her ranking rose enough during her return that she can participate in qualifying for the next major tournament, Wimbledon. She is an undoubted star and a huge drawcard wherever she plays and one would imagine that her presence in the tournament would have only got more people through the gates.

She was initially banned for two years but the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the suspension to 15 months on appeal after finding she was not an "intentional doper".

"[Her] suspension is over and she can take her path toward new success", he added, noting he told Sharapova the news previously in person. After starting from scratch, she is already back well inside the top 200 and could be around the 150 mark with a win on Tuesday in Rome.

President Bernard Giudicelli Ferrandini confirmed that the 30-year-old Russian was not one of the 12 female players given a space in either the qualification rounds or main draw for the Grand Slam being held at Roland Garros in Paris between May 28 and June 11. It was inconceivable to take a decision that would have been the opposite of this. We must respect the spirit of fair play.

Sharapova is guaranteed a qualifying spot at Wimbledon in July after winning her opening match in Rome, although she missed a chance at direct entrance into the main draw after a second-round exit on Tuesday.

It is a fearless and principled decision, which will upset some fans and broadcasters. She was a past champion at all three. "I don't think that's right and she's not someone I can say I look up to anymore".
