Betsy DeVos booed, some turn backs during B-CU commencement speech

That's inexplicable. That it was at historically black Bethune-Cookman University-after DeVos idiotically linked HBCUs to her pet project of school choice-pushed it into farce.

A number of students turned their backs on the Michigan Republican as she spoke after receiving an honorary doctorate at Bethune-Cookman Univeristy in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Most importantly, opponents find it hard to forget the education secretary's off-mark statement that HBCU's were pioneers of school choice-void of key historical context regarding the creation of HBCU's, born out of segregation laws that barred African-Americans from attaining higher-education.

DeVos later amended her comments in a series of tweets the next day, reflecting the importance of the institutions.

It was announced that Devos was picked as the commencement speaker during the time when students were taking final exams. She's also shown a lack of intelligence when it comes to the education system and history. "Let's choose to hear each other out", DeVos said in reaction, trying to control the situation.

CNN reports today's "commencement program said she was slated to speak an hour or more, but she wrapped up her remarks in about 20 minutes". When university President Edison Jackson introduced her, the boo's rained down mercilessly.

If Wednesday was a test for the head of the Department of Education among historically black colleges and universities, it proved DeVos has much work ahead of her. DeVos was met with a chorus of boos from students and faculty when she took the stage to give the keynote address.

Business Insider notes that DeVos powered through, addressing opposition to her speaking at the university and adding, "We support you and we will continue to support you".

The newly sworn-in Secretary, who has no previous educational experience, went on to discuss her respect for the University's founder, Mary McLeod Bethune. We told her about some of the issues we are facing, about students who are single parents, or come from single-parent families, even students who are homeless, and she agreed that we need to find a way to address all of this. And while we will undoubtedly disagree at times, I hope we can do so respectfully. "While we may share differing points of view, my visit and dialogue with students leaves me encouraged and committed to supporting HBCUs".

"They" would be the graduating students at Bethune-Cookman University's commencement ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.
