Palestinian President expresses deep appreciation for President Trump after meeting

Hosting Mr Abbas at the White House on Wednesday, Mr Trump said he would do "whatever is necessary" to bring together the Palestinians and Israelis, who have been warring over the same small patch of land for generations.

Middle Eastern name calling made the headlines as a senior Palestinian Authority official called President Trump's request to stop paying convicted terrorists "insane", and Israeli Prime Minister questioned the PA's ability to tell the truth.

"That's unfortunately not true", he proclaimed.

Abbas said he believes the Trump administration can play an important role as a mediator, and the USA president indeed restated his ambition to facilitate the deal that has eluded negotiators for over two decades. The two leaders discussed the importance of the United States-Palestinian partnership in building and sustaining the capacity of Palestinian security forces to counter terrorism, maintaining peace and security for the Palestinians, and continuing strong coordination with the Israeli government to benefit both peoples.

Still, the very fact that the meeting was held was an improvement for Abbas over the early weeks of the Trump administration, when the Palestinians felt ignored and frozen out.

Abbas spoke through an interpreter and said: "We are coming into a new opportunity a new horizon that would enable us to bring about peace".

"Mr. President, I affirm to you that we are raising our youth, our children, our grandchildren on a culture of peace", Abbas told Trump.

"Trump may discuss the outcomes of the occupation, but not for ending it, or he would seek more pressure on the Palestinians to accept his vision that Israel backs", the analyst said.

"But I hope that it's possible to achieve a change and to pursue a genuine peace", Netanyahu added.

Mr Abbas said he is ready to meet Mr Netanyahu, and suggested the Israeli leader is avoiding such talks.

President Trump highlighted his commitment to enabling meaningful economic growth in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which will enhance the prospects for a just and lasting peace.

In an interview Thursday with Israel Radio, Shaath equated the PA's payments to Palestinian terrorists with salaries Israel provides to members of the IDF.
