White House bathed in blue for Peace Officer's Memorial Day

President John Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. Currently, there are 21,183 names engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Compounding the tragedy: 64 of those deaths were from gunfire, the highest number in five years, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Last year, 143 officers were killed on duty, down from the 159 who died in President George W. Bush's final year in office. "We are forever in their debt and always grateful to them".

"We place a great responsibility on our law enforcement officers", Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said.

When a law enforcement officer acts out of line they should - and must - be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. He's one of 48 Honolulu Police officers who died on the job, remembered at Monday night's candlelight vigil.

The White House was bathed in blue lights Monday evening in recognition of Peace Officer's Memorial Day.

This is the 35th year for Amarillo's memorial service.

By the time you read this, the national toll may well have already increased. Bainbridge Public Safety says it should be more than just a holiday to support and honor officers past and present. However, you can probably find videos/images online.

We honor the memory of our heroic fallen in tributes like these across the nation this week.

We also realize that families of law enforcement make sacrifices and suffer when tragedy strikes.

Instead, our televisions and newsfeeds are dominated by stories that villainize those who do the most on our behalf and attempt to exploit the few bad apples working in law enforcement as representatives of the entire community.

Thanking them, Trump, who noted in his remarks that he was in NY when the September 11, 2001, attacks took place, said: "I will make it the personal priority of my administration to ensure that our police are finally treated fairly, with honour and the respect that they deserve". "You leave your family to protect someone else's family and you don't even know them, so if you think about it it takes really special people to do that kind of work".
