Cornell killed himself by hanging

There's really not much more to say here: Flavorwire is as shocked by Cornell's death as everyone else.

News of Chris Cornell dead came from The New York Times this morning with the musician's representative Brian Bumbrey calling the death "sudden and unexpected", adding that Cornell's family would be "working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause".

A medical examiner has determined that Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging in a Detroit hotel room following a concert.

The singer's last tweet had announced his return to "Rock City" Detroit. He said Cornell's wife had called a family friend and asked him to check on Cornell; the friend forced open a hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor. He founded the band Soundgarden in 1984, but they wouldn't find big fame until 10 years later when their album Superunknown launched them onto the charts with the singles "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman". "There was about two years where I was more or less agoraphobic and didn't deal with anybody, didn't talk to anybody, didn't have any friends at all".

Best known as the lead singer for the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, Cornell, 52, achieved multi-platinum success, earned multiple Grammys and wrote and performed the theme song for the James Bond movie "Casino Royale". We're told Cornell was pronounced dead on the scene.

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney were among the most high-profile bands to come out of Seattle and dominated the pop culture landscape of the early and mid-1990s.

The band broke up in 1997 but later reformed.

Audioslave disbanded in 2007, but Cornell and Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and released the band's sixth studio album, "King Animal" in 2012.

Cornell also collaborated with members of what would become Pearl Jam to form Temple of the Dog, which produced a self-titled album in 1991 in tribute to friend Andrew Wood, former frontman for Mother Love Bone. In 2001, he joined Audioslave, a supergroup that included former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford. The group performed in Cuba in 2005, billed at the time as the country's first outdoor rock concert by an American band.

In the late 1990s, Chris Cornell began a solo career that would eventually span five albums. Their most successful single, "Like a Stone" released in 2003.

Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction tweeted that he was stunned by the death.

His death has been ruled "hanging by suicide".

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry also paid tribute, writing: "Very sad news about Chris Cornell today". The station played non-stop songs from Soundgarden, Cornell's other bands and his solo work, as well as artists who covered Cornell's material and those who were influenced by him.

"Seattle's son, Chris Cornell, has passed away", DJ John Richards told listeners.
