Chris Cornell, the unmistakable voice and frontman of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, died overnight in Detroit at the age of 52.

According to TMZ, Cornell was found with a band around his neck.

ORIGINAL: 6:30 a.m. Soundgarden is best known for its songs "Black Hole Sun", "Spoonman" and "Fell on Black Days".

Rep Brian Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said Cornell's wife and family were shocked by it.

A medical examiner has determined that Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging in a Detroit hotel room following a concert.

Michael Woody, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, told CNN the death is being investigated as a "possible suicide".

News of Cornell's death prompted scores of tweets expressing sadness. "A great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man".

The spokesperson described the death as a "apparent suicide", but wouldn't confirm that pending an autopsy and coroner's report.

Cornell first rose to stardom almost three decades ago as the lead vocalist of the Seattle-based grunge rock band Soundgarden.

Three years later, Soundgarden released Superunknown, a mainstream music scene success that earned the band two Grammys after it reached the top of music lists.

While his musical contributions seemingly never stopped between then and now, Chris Cornell's most recent work was released in March of 2017 with the single "The Promise". In addition to his notable work in bands, Cornell also had a successful solo career. After 1996's Down on the Upside, the band broke up and Cornell released the solo record Euphoria Morning in 1999.

A few years later, Cornell teamed with 3/4 of Rage Against the Machine for the supergroup Audioslave. Woody said that police are unable to discuss what was found in Cornell's hotel room at the time of his death.
