Roger Ailes, founder of Fox News and once the world's most powerful media executive, is dead

Ailes was a prominent figure in American media as well as a powerful force in conservative politics, and many expressed their condolences.

Mr Ailes, she said, was "the most wonderful loving husband (to me) and father to our son Zachary".

"He is generous. There's one side of him, the political side and the businessman side, and the other side is he's generous to his community", said Alcorn.

"Basically how they shaped that conservative opinion that quite frankly before Fox news many think didn't have that play before".

But he stepped down past year after a number of female employees accused him of sexual harassment.

At the same time, Ailes' accomplishments were overshadowed by the sexual harassment scandals at Fox News that led to his ignominious departure from the cable channel previous year.

Although his being gay was long and open secret, Smith finally came out publicly last fall when speaking about the Ailes sexual harassment scandal. It was Ailes who called CNN "Clinton News Network", and CBS "Communist Broadcasting System".

A former GOP operative to candidates including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and a one-time adviser to President Donald Trump, Ailes displayed a mastery of modern messaging early in his career. In a second tweet, he relayed that, "Per 2nd family friend on cause of death: Ailes fell in Palm Beach and had a blood clot from the fall".

Shepard Smith opened his broadcast Thursday with a 13 minute monologue on Roger Ailes, the former Fox News chairman who died Thursday at the age of 77. "He was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise-and to give back", Drudge Report quoted Elizabeth as saying in a statement.

"Many people out there would say that he saved this country by starting the Fox News channel", added anchor Ainsley Earhardt.

The 77-year old Ailes died Thursday in Palm Beach, Florida.

"Today America lost one of its great patriotic warriors", Fox News host Sean Hannity said on the channel on Thursday.

The Republican success can not be totally attributed to Ailes' network, of course, but there was broad agreement Thursday on both sides of the aisle that Ailes' conservative network was a major factor.

"Roger Ailes was a genius at politics and the news media. He had many critics and like ALL of us his sins, but I remember a great patriot, friend and boss", he tweeted. Ailes partnered with media king, Rupert Murdoch and used Murdoch's money as an investment to build Fox News to become the widely successful cable network that it's known for presently.

Ailes leaves behind his wife, along with their son, Zachary Ailes.
