Ryan Fitzpatrick agrees to deal with Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Fitzpatrick had a strong 2015 season, but he and the New York Jets struggled to get a deal done.

At the end of the season, Fitzpatrick acknowledged that his starting days in the National Football League were probably over, but he expressed a strong interest in resuming his career. It was not a surprise when the Buccaneers let quarterback Mike Glennon walk in free agency knowing there was no chance he would start in Winston's place unless the former Heisman Trophy victor went down injured.

Winston, the first overall pick in the 2015 draft, has started all 32 Buccaneers games since his arrival, throwing for 8,132 yards and 50 touchdowns.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms on a contract with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, providing Jameis Winston with an experienced veteran backup. They entered offseason workouts with Ryan Griffin, Sean Renfree and undrafted rookie Sefo Liufau as their backups. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams and also has played for the Bengals, Titans and Texans. Fitzpatrick was not re-signed following a 5-11 season. The former Harvard University graduate started 116 games over the course of 12 seasons, going 46-69-1.

Technically, Fitzpatrick became a free agent on February 10, when his contract automatically voided. He has 166 touchdown passes, 133 interceptions and has thrown for 25,888 career yards, which is 14th on the active list.

Among the 60 wide receivers to see at least 80 targets last season, Evans had the fifth-most Reception Net Expected Points (NEP) per target while Jackson came in 16th. Fitzpatrick has never appeared in a playoff game.
