Chaffetz resigning from Congress as of June 30

Jason Chaffetz was a determined investigator of the Obama administration and of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State.

A poll shows most Utahns disapprove of Donald Trump's job performance as president, but the numbers haven't changed from election day 2016.

A Republican congressman said Thursday night that Congress and the nation may be just days away from James Comey breaking his silence after being fired as Federal Bureau of Investigation director by President Donald Trump.

And now, just as he says he has his "subpoena pen ready" so the Oversight Committee can get its hands on fired FBI Director James Comey's memos, he's going to hand the pen off to someone else.

It was announced this week that the Chairman of the House Governmental Oversight Committee will leave Congress, effective June 30.

After Trump won, liberals hammered him for not going after Trump's administration with almost the vigor used against Democrats.

When he turned 50 in March Chaffetz said the realization that he had spent more than 1,500 days away from his family hit him "harder than it had before".

New polls show more Americans disapprove then approve of James Comey firing
White House press secretary Sean Spicer flatly denied a loyalty pledge was ever brought up at the private White House dinner. Hudson, a Bush appointee who struck down the centerpiece of the Obama administration's health care law in 2010.

Chaffetz said last month that he would not seek re-election in 2018 and that he was considering leaving office early. But he did not provide a date for his departure until Thursday.

Chaffetz talked to reporters about his decision from his home in Alpine, Utah, later Thursday.

Serving you in the U.S. House of Representatives for almost nine years has been a rare honor and privilege.

In a Republican-led Congress, though, it doesn't seem likely that whoever replaces Chaffetz as oversight chair will be less interested in meddling in D.C. Reports indicate that South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy, who headed up the Benghazi investigation, will likely take over the committee. But they'll face an uphill battle in Chaffetz's heavily Republican district, which stretches from Salt Lake City's southeastern suburbs to desert towns in southeastern Utah and includes heavily conservative Mormon areas.

Utah's election law says that if a U.S. House seat becomes vacant, the governor will call a special election. "When I first ran for Congress in 2008 I promised I would get in, serve, and get out".

"A lot of people will never believe that", he said.
