Cornell's death leads to cancellation of rock fest

The musician was in the middle of a tour with Soundgarden, and had been performing a sold-out show at the Fox Theatre just hours before his death.

Rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, killed himself by hanging.

A full autopsy report was not yet completed Thursday afternoon. "There is no additional information at this time", it said.

Accounts of Chris Cornell's last concert in Detroit describe the singer's erratic behavior on stage, offering insight into the last moments before he was found dead at his hotel's restroom after the concert. The band tweeted Wednesday night a quote from Cornell: "What I look forward to the the camaraderie".

Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and embarked on the current USA tour in April.

According to TMZ, Chris' wife spoke to him before he performed Wednesday night and didn't see any signs that he was in a suicidal or depressed state. He says Cornell's wife called a family friend and asked him to check on Cornell. His representative called the death "sudden and unexpected", the New York Times reports.

Grief-stricken Chris Cornell fans have left flowers at memorials across Seattle for the musician whose forceful, sombre songs helped cement the city's place in rock history. Rising in the early 90s with fellow grunge bands Peal Jam, Nirvana and Alice in Chains, Soundgarden's popular hits included "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman".

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997 due to tensions in the band and Cornell pursued a solo career.

Condolences are pouring in for Chris Cornell, the lead singer of Seattle-based bands Soundgarden and Temple Of The Dog.

In 2001, Cornell joined members of Rage Against The Machine to form Audioslave, which earned acclaim with its self-titled album that earned three-platinum status.

Soundgarden got back together after 13 years off the road, and one of their first stops after reuniting was a headlining slot at 2011's Voodoo Music Experience.

The final solo recording released by Cornell was "The Promise", released on May 10.
