Investigation launched into whether White House officials covered up Russian meddling

President Trump told Russian officials last week that he had fired the "nut job" FBI Director James Comey to ease the pressure of the mounting investigation into his campaign's ties to Russia, according to a report from The New York Times. (American learned this from photos circulated by Russian media.) And you might have thought it was an even worse idea for Trump to reveal classified information to Kislyak and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the meeting. "He was insane, a real nut job", Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official.

One official had read quotations to the Times and another had confirmed the broad outlines of the discussion.

In a statement Mr Spicer said Mr Comey's pursuit of the probe had harmed Mr Trump's ability to deal with Russian Federation over issues including Syria and Ukraine.

The notes were taken from inside the office and circulated "as the official account of the meeting". Laying aside the fact that Spicer is also connecting Comey's firing to the Russian Federation investigation, which only makes the obstruction suspicions stronger, if the White House wanted less "grandstanding" and more investigating why did it oppose the appointment of a special counsel? The Post also reported that while the initial investigation was into coordination between Trump officials and Russian Federation, sources said it has expanded to include potential financial crimes committed by those close to Trump. The official claims that Trump simply used the topic to segue into creating a sense of obligation with Russian officials and to coax concessions out of Lavrov regarding Syria, Ukraine and other issues by bringing up the fact that Russia interfering in the U.S. election caused him great political strife.

Rosenstein briefed lawmakers on Friday days after appointing a special prosecutor, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, to oversee the Russian Federation investigation. Trump was telling Mr. Lavrov of the "pressure" he was now under.

Trump last week fired Comey from his role as Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Jeffrey Toobin, a CNN legal analyst, said Trump's reported comments were "close to a confession of obstruction of justice". This could implicate Jared Kushner, as he's the only senior White House advisor now known to have had contact with Russian officials.

In a briefing to member of the House of Representatives a day after he briefed senators, Mr Rosenstein said that Mr Comey' handling of Hillary Clinton' email scandal had been criticized by officials from both political parties.

The Times reports that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer did not dispute the version of events.

The summary was drawn from a formal account of last week's meeting, which was attended by Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak - a man at the centre of numerous controversial contacts between the Trump campaign and senior Russian officials.
