ANC dismisses Zuma removal report as 'fabrication'

According to the report, the issue of the motion of no confidence vote in president Zuma will be raised at the NEC meeting to be held from 26 to 28 May 2017, and some members may bring up the possibility of removing Zuma as president.

A source speaking to Business Day told the paper the decision to ban Zuma was a matter of principle, saying though Cosatu could not tell the ANC who to deploy to its central executive meeting, it was a given that the deputy president would fill Zuma's shoes in his absence.

Some unions affiliated to Cosatu objected to the president's address, saying that by allowing him to address Cosatu's events a confusing message was sent about the federation's position on the president to step down.

"The special CEC meeting ultimately resolved that, in respect of the mandate from the workers and in line with the CEC resolution for him to step down, Zuma will no longer be welcome to address Cosatu", its general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said.

Cosatu was pivotal in Zuma's election as ANC leader at the party's elective conference in Polokwane in 2007. We only sent the communication to the ANC, to say 'we have a May Day activity, can you deploy leaders?'.

"We want to see an ANC that will not only rediscover its mass character but that will use its organizational mass power to assert a people driven and a people centred development; instead of using it to fight internal factional battles to get people elected to positions of power", COSATU said.

The move is likely to escalate tensions within the tripartite alliance.

"This shall be communicated to the ANC (African National Congress), including engaging on its implications for our alliance", the trade federation said.

Investors are also keeping tabs on the release of the minutes of the US Federal Reserve's most recent meeting on Wednesday, to gauge the Fed's tone on interest rates.

GM has already served retrenchment notices, in terms of section 189 (A) of the Labour Relations Act, to metalworkers union Numsa.

Ntshalintshali said: "One of the unmentioned reasons for the disinvestment of GMSA [GM South Africa] is the question of lack of leadership, which has been raised by rating agencies". "While the issue of leadership is now a challenge, it is regrettable that GMSA may be using politics to deal with business challenges", Ntshalintshali added.
