Kids threatening to run away and join the circus are examining their options this morning, as the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, once one of the biggest names in American entertainment, has performed its last show.

Circus managers said in January that declining attendance and increasing operating costs are forcing what is known as the "Greatest Show on Earth" to come to a close.

After 146 years of dazzling crowds all over the world, the final performance for the famed circus was held at the Nassau Coliseum. Another new performance features the "Wacky, One-Wheeled Wonder" Wesley Williams riding a 25-foot unicycle around the big top's performance ring and a dizzying display by NY juggler Jacob D'Eustachio. After two decades of barnstorming across the United States, Ringling Brothers purchased the Barnum and Bailey circus in 1907.

He led the circus performers, crew and audience through an emotional rendition of Auld Lang Syne.Circus fans can watch final show online here.Stay on topic - This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand.Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk. In May 2016, the company removed elephants from its shows, but ticket sales continued to decline.

Animal rights activists protesting even the last show played a significant role in the circus' demise.

More than 500 people who worked as the spellbinding acts and the quiet teams behind the scenes that kept the circus running all these years are unemployed Monday, including the Florida horse team originally from Kazikstan.

Oh my. It's curtains for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

His parents met at the Ringling circus in 1954.

Her sister, Dawn Mirowitz, 42, of Dix Hills, New York, sobered as she pondered a future without the Ringling Brothers circus. "And that's what P.T. Barnum created, that's what the Greatest Show on Earth is - it's an experience".

Feld Entertainment CEO Kenneth Feld said that "we all have to embrace change".

"Like always, things miraculously come together at the last moment", he said. "People are not really concerned with wildlife until they feel it and see it and enjoy it", he said, "and love it as much as I do, until they've seen it with their own eyes".

Feld chose to fold its tent as a result of high operating costs combined with lower ticket sales, it said in a statement at the time.
