James Comey's father defends son, blasts Trump as 'nuts'

A New York Magazine reporter has named US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner as the senior White House official identified as a "person of interest" in the ongoing FBI investigation into the Trump campaign's ties with Russian Federation.

Republican U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona told "Fox News Sunday" he was left "speechless" by reports of Trump's remarks about Comey in the May 10 meeting with Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister and Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the United States. Separately, another Times report said Trump had told Russian officials in a closed-door meeting at the Oval Office that firing Comey "had relieved great pressure on him".

Trump fired Comey - who was spearheading the Russian Federation probe at the time - two weeks ago. The former director agreed to testify before the Senate intelligence committee after the Memorial Day holiday. It did note that the White House has previously acknowledged contacts between Kushner and Russian Federation, and that Kushner is among those whose ties with Moscow have come under scrutiny.

"Director Comey served his country with honor for many years, and he deserves an opportunity to tell his story. Moreover, the American people deserve an opportunity to hear it".

Considering Trump's questionable firing of FBI director James Comey and the Trump administration's misleading account of how and why Comey was ousted, it became increasingly clear that an independent investigation was needed.

The New York Times reported last week on a Comey memo indicating Trump had urged him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

At a news conference Thursday, Trump angrily denied that he had asked Comey to end the investigation, which is now in the hands of new special counsel Robert Mueller.

"He and I have an unwritten secret agreement that I don't talk about his job", J. Brien Comey said.

The White House counsel informed the President, reports CNN.

According to one source with knowledge, Comey's relationship with Trump was uncomfortable from the start.

But Rosenstein told lawmakers that he drafted his memo only after Trump told him of his plans to dismiss the Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

This upcoming testimony, which would be made under oath, will mark Comey's first public statements since his firing on May 9.
