Trump, Abbas say peace deal with Israel is possible

He said he was "truly hopeful that America can help Israel and the Palestinians forge peace and bringing new hope the region and its people".

The President said that "Peace can never take root in an environment where violence is tolerated, funded and even rewarded", in an undisguised criticism of the Palestinian Authority and Mahmoud Abbas.

Relying on one of his preferred insults, Trump said he would call the perpetrators "losers, because that's what they are".

After the short meeting, Abbas and Trump held a press conference at the Presidential headquarters in Bethlehem.

Abbas reiterated the Palestinian commitment to work with the US president to achieve a historic peace deal, based on the two-state solution. He reiterated the Palestinians' demands, including establishing a capital in East Jerusalem, territory Israel claims as well, insisting that "our problem is not with the Jewish religion, it's with the occupation and settlements, and with Israel not recognizing the state of Palestine".

Trump said the terrorists must be driven out from our society and their ideology obliterated.

"The people of Israel applaud you" for visiting the Western Wall, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Trump at the end of a day of meetings and ceremonies. And in today's attack it was mostly innocent children.

Trump was joined by first lady Melania Trump, son-in-law Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka Trump.

Trump's brief journey from Jerusalem to Bethlehem offered a visual reminder of the complexities of the conflict.

Speaking from the West Bank in Bethlehem, Trump extended his sympathies to those affected by the attacks and delivered a withering assessment of those responsible.

He will need to cross Israel's West Bank separation wall, which will eventually extend some 700 kilometers to separate Israel and Palestinian territories. Palestinians say the barrier is a land grab because it slices off 10 percent of the West Bank. Trump is expected to make remarks during the meeting on the deadly explosion at a concert in Manchester, England.

Trump spoke on his fourth and final day in the Middle East. Still, White House officials have downplayed expectations for a significant breakthrough on this trip. Trump approached alone and placed his hand on the stone.

President Donald Trump's first visit to Jerusalem as president is being overshadowed by reminders of tumult back home. And he sent a signal of solidarity to an ally he's pushing to work harder toward peace with the Palestinians. Abbas is an unpopular leader, according to polls, and the Palestinian political landscape is split between his Fatah party and Hamas, the Islamist movement that is in control in the Gaza Strip and opposes negotiations with Israel. Various officials have said that was the source of the classified intelligence. He also faces difficulties at home, where he is struggling to contain a scandal after firing James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director two weeks ago.
