President Donald Trump defended the timing of his firing of FBI Director James Comey in an interview Saturday night on Fox News, saying, "There's really no right time to do it".

WASHINGTON - While Democrats may trot out any number of demands or maneuvers to influence the selection of the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, here's a reality check: Republican President Trump fired James Comey, and he and his party will decide who's next.

Two White House officials said some of Trump's frustration centers on what he views as unfair coverage of his decisions and overly harsh criticism of press secretary Sean Spicer, as well as deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders, who led much of the response to Comey's firing.

Trump's popularity didn't seem to take a significant hit from the Comey investigation - it dropped one point from last month's NBC/WSJ survey to 39% support. The mainstream media continue to push this innuendo-laden narrative in their attempt to delegitimize and destroy the Trump presidency.

The FBI Agents Association has endorsed former Republican congressman Mike Rogers, an ex-FBI agent and former chair of the House intelligence committee who had collegial relationships with his Democratic counterparts.

The next director will immediately be confronted with oversight of an FBI investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, an inquiry the bureau's acting head, Andrew McCabe, has called "highly significant".

Other interviews were expected with Adam Lee, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Richmond, Virginia, office; acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe; New York Court of Appeals Associate Judge Michael Garcia; and Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, according to sources familiar with the search.

"I think the process is going to go quickly", said Trump, before delivering the commencement address at Liberty University in Virginia.

The Trump administration is looking to fill the job, which requires Senate confirmation, after Trump abruptly fired Director James Comey on Tuesday.

Fisher formerly served as assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Criminal Division.

"I would be sorry to lose Senator Cornyn, but would he be a great FBI Director?"

Sessions has faced questions over whether his involvement in Comey's firing violates his pledge to recuse himself from investigations into Russian interference in the election.

The White House initially said Trump was compelled to fire Comey by a critical memo from the deputy attorney general on the director's handling of last year's investigation into Hillary Clinton's email.

"We have got to make sure that these tapes, if they exist, don't mysteriously disappear", Warner said, adding that he hopes to have Comey testify in a public hearing before his committee.

Clapper and Schumer made their comments on CNN's "State of the Union"; Graham spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press".
