1B prospect Travis gets called up by Red Sox

Boston Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts (50) celebrates his home run with shortstop Xander Bogaerts (2) during the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park. In 278 minor league games, Travis has hit.301 (319-for-1,060) with 26 home runs, 27 stolen bases, and an.815 OPS, playing no defensive position other than first base. But Travis has bounced back with a strong start to 2017 and now is hitting.286 with four home runs and 14 RBI through 33 games for the PawSox. Further, Infielder Mitch Moreland will face his former team Rangers for the first time since signing a free-agent deal with Boston this offseason. Moreland is in the top 5 of numerous important hitting categories for Boston and even leads the team with 16 doubles. Travis has only ever played first base in his professional career.

Although it's not exactly the MLB, Travis comes with a great track record in Spring Training. Travis is no ordinary first basemen in the Red Sox farm system. That all seems a bit magnified this season, as sources told Rosenthal that some Red Sox players feel Farrell does not support them enough in the media when the team is struggling. Will Travis help Boston get some offense going? The team announced Tuesday afternoon that they have called up first baseman Sam Travis from Pawtucket and optioned pitcher Hector Velazquez to make room on the roster. But if Travis is able to explode like he has in Spring Training, you might find it awfully hard to demote a player that brought spark to a seemingly lifeless ballclub.

OUR PREDICTION: The Red Sox are now 0-4 in their last four games against the A's and are 16-35 in their last 51 games in Oakland. Even with Moreland being one of the more consistent hitters so far this season, his job is not safe because doing what he has done isn't something out of the ordinary for a first basemen. At 6 feet 205, Travis is just that, only time will tell if he pans out, but my money is on him being a star in the Boston spotlight.
