Police identified the bomber on Tuesday as Salman Abedi, a 22-year-old born in Manchester and of Libyan origin.

Abedi had a sister named Jomana Abedi, the USA security officials said.

Another survivor of the Monday night attack, Ryan Molloy, said some people had their bags checked on the way into the concert, while others did not.

At just past 6:30 in the morning, Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins issued a statement called the attack the "most horrific incident" the city had had to face.

Blondie cancelled a Tuesday night concert in London "as a mark of respect for the victims of the awful attack" at the Manchester Arena.

"Everyone pls share this, my little sister Emma was at the Ari concert tonight in #Manchester and she isn't answering her phone, pls help me", said one message posted alongside a picture of a blonde girl with flowers in her hair. "All acts of terrorism are cowardly attacks on innocent people, but this attack stands out for its appalling, sickening cowardice".

Many supporters of the Islamic terror group also flocked to the encrypted messaging service Telegram, where they celebrated the attack. Police raided houses in Manchester and arrested a 23-year-old man.

All smiles as Pope Francis meets with Donald Trump at the Vatican
After visits with the Muslims and Jews, President Donald Trump took on perhaps his toughest audience yet: the Catholics. It's been a whirlwind of a first trip overseas for the president, his family and White House advisers.

The voice can be heard saying: "Ladies and gentleman, please take your time, there's no need to bunch up, there are no problems here - just take your time and keep exiting the building". Video and photos of the immediate aftermath show children and some parents running and screaming, as they dashed for the exits.

July 7 2005: 4 suicide bombers detonated 3 bombs in 3 London Underground trains in central London, killing 52, injuring over 700.

Mayor Andy Burnham has subsequently planned a vigil for 6 p.m.in Manchester City Centre's Albert Square. It suggested explosive devices were placed "in the midst of the gatherings of the Crusaders". But Western experts were sceptical, noting it had offered two accounts of the attack contradicting each other. That reference, however, was later removed.

"It is a possibility we can not ignore that there is a wider group of individuals linked to this attack", May said. Campaigning was suspended as a mark of respect.

The person, who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he/she was not allowed to publicly talk about the topic, said Grande's show has not been cancelled or postponed despite reports claiming that changes to her schedule have been made. Children were among the dead, police said.

The White House said Trump had agreed with May during their telephone conversation that the attack was "particularly wanton and depraved". "But nothing is consistent", Bob Ayers, a security expert who used to work for the Central Intelligence Agency, said. Hours later, they reported that they were treating the explosion as a terrorist attack. Queen Elizabeth held a minute's silence at a garden party at Buckingham Palace in London. British election rolls listed Abedi as living at a modest red brick semi-detached house in a mixed suburb of Manchester where police performed a controlled explosion Tuesday afternoon.

Armed police swept the area for any additional threats, moving from street to street and building to building. "The professionalism of our officers who responded to the incident is also commendable and indicative of British policing". Security will be reviewed for smaller events.

In 2015, Pakistani student Abid Naseer was convicted in a US court of conspiring with al-Qaeda to blow up the Arndale shopping centre in the centre of Manchester in April 2009.
