Last week the committee's chairman Senator Richard Burr told reporters that Mr Flynn was "not cooperating" with the investigation, adding that they had not received "a definitive answer" on whether he would testify.

U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz waves after addressing the Utah GOP Convention Saturday, May 20, 2017, in Sandy, Utah. Chaffetz said this week that he's stepping aside from Congress next month during the prime of his career and just as.

"The subpoena seeks to compel (Flynn) to offer testimony through the act of producing documents that may or may not exist".

Former CIA Director John Brennan testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, May 23, 2017, before the House Intelligence Committee Russia Investigation Task Force.

The committee is investigating Russia's campaign meddling and possible ties to President Donald Trump's associates.

That document had asked him to provide a wide array of records regarding his contacts with Russians and Russian business interests. "But I know there was a basis to have individuals pull those threads". In later comments to the media, Trump justified the firing by saying he wanted to stave off a politicized FBI investigation of his ties to Russian Federation.

"It should be clear to everyone that Russian Federation brazenly interfered in our 2016 present election process" and did so despite strong protests and his warning, he said. Any immunity agreement, he said, would only take place after speaking with former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the executive branch's investigation into potential collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's associates.

The US president said in that encounter that he had just fired the Federal Bureau of Investigation director because he was a "real nut job" and his dismissal eased "a great pressure because of Russia", the New York Times reported.

Ms Parker, 33, was knocked to the floor with the force of the explosion, but ran back inside the building to help victims. The first victims of the attack have been named as 18-year-old Georgina Callander and eight-year-old Saffie Rose Roussos.

Flynn's decision to decline to comply with the Senate Intelligence Committee subpoena was first reported by the Associated Press.

But ordering Flynn to appear isn't the only option open to the Senate.

A Republican member of the Senate Intelligence Committee says "we will get to the truth one way or another" even though former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn is citing Fifth Amendment protections in the panel's investigation into Russian Federation.

"While we recognize General Flynn's constitutional right to invoke the Fifth Amendment, we are disappointed he has chosen to disregard the Committee's subpoena request for documents relevant and necessary to our investigation".

Citing current and former officials, the Post said the national intelligence director, Daniel Coats, and the director of the National Security Agency, Adm. Michael S. Rogers, both refused Trump's request, judging it inappropriate. Everything but immunity, he added. The thing is, the FBI and Justice Department investigation could put him in jail.

Former CIA Director John Brennan says he warned Russia against meddling in the presidential election during a call to the head of the Russian intelligence service on August 4.

The latter option has not been used in 75 years.

He says the Russian intelligence official denied that Russia was meddling, but said he would raise the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, it has not been alleged that Trump told the Russians that Israel was the source.
