Deadly drink: Teen suffered cardiac event due to caffeine

A 16-year-old high school student from SC suddenly died last April after consuming three caffeinated drinks over the course of about two hours.

Richland County coroner Gary Watts said such occurrences are "highly unusual".

A McDonald's latte has 142 mg of caffeine, a 570 ml Mountain Dew has 90 mg, and a 450 ml energy drink can have as much as 240 mg. He collapsed in class around 2:30.

He said the autopsy revealed no undiagnosed heart conditions but acknowledged that Cripe had "a previous history of drinking caffeinated beverages", however nothing that his family considered to be an addiction.

While holding back his tears, Sean said, "It wasn't a auto crash that took his life".

"The thing about caffeinated drinks is those may contain more caffeine than coffee". The coroner also added, "We lost Davis from a totally legal substance".

He said the primary witness to what Cripe drank could not definitely say what brand of energy drink he had but said it was from a container the size of a large soft drink.

The South Carolina Coroner's Association said death from too much caffeine was very rare and this was the first case they were aware of in the state.

Watts says like many, Cripe was doing something he thought was totally harmless, but Watts said the drinks can be very risky.
