Charlie's Angels is getting a fresh makeover nearly two decades after the first crime thriller movie, courtesy of the brains behind the hit musical Pitch Perfect 2.

The Elizabeth Banks' helmed reboot of Charlie's Angels has received a 2019 release date from its studio.

Sony has slotted in TriStar Pictures' The Nightingale, Columbia Pictures' Charlie's Angels and an untitled animated franchise pic to its release schedule. The franchise began with a TV show that ran from 1976-1981 starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd.

It's now been confirmed by Variety that Elizabeth Banks has been lined up to direct a new reboot of Charlie's Angels and Narcos screenwriters Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard to help crack the story. The film will be produced with Banks and Max Handelman for their Brownstone production company. But a younger generation knows it for the 2000 film adaptation and its 2003 sequel, which featured three former LAPD members (Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore) who, along with their male sidekick Bosley, solved cases for a mysterious man named Charlie.

Casting details have not yet been released, however, Hidden Figures star Janelle Monae is apparently being targeted for a central role.

Banks recently had to give up the director's chair on Pitch Perfect 3 because of her "parental responsibilities". Sony also marked its calendar for a release on July 24, 2020. Directed by Game of Thrones alum Michelle MacLaren, the upcoming drama is based on the Kristin Hannah novel set in a German-occupied France during World War II.
