FBI Russia Probe Expands to WH Adviser 'Close to the President'

The scope of the investigation expanded after reports that Trump might have pressured former FBI Director James Comey to drop the agency's investigation into Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser.

Notably, Spicer didn't deny the "nut job" quote.

"I hope that former Director Comey's testimony will help answer some of the questions that have arisen since Director Comey was so suddenly dismissed by the President", Warner said in the same statement.

The Times cited a White House document that "has been circulated as the official account of the meeting".

The developments were a blow to White House efforts to dampen down interest in the Russian Federation investigation as Mr Trump and his staff boarded Air Force One for Saudi Arabia, the first stop on his first foreign trip as President.

Comey was abruptly fired by Trump at a time when he was leading an investigation into whether Trump's election campaign had links with Russian Federation in the USA polls a year ago.

White House refuses to answer questions on Trump 'taping Comey's conversations'
President Donald Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey this week, in a move that has left more questions than answers. Asked again if Spicer will be around "tomorrow", the president simply said that he's "been there from the beginning".

"By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia's actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russia", Spicer said, reiterating criticism that the president also leveled at Comey in an interview with NBC News.

Comey's firing was one in a series of jarring developments that culminated on Wednesday in the Justice Department's appointment of a special counsel to probe possible ties between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

This came up during Trump's Oval Office meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak that took place one day after Comey got the boot.

In response, Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM), asked this question: "What's worse: President admitting Comey was sacked over Russian Federation, or Spicer justifying it?"

A senior White House official close to President Donald Trump is now a "significant person of interest" in the FBI's probe into whether Trump or his associates colluded with the Kremlin to influence the 2016 election, according to a new report.

"Congress is going to want to look over the shoulder of this investigation", he said. But he made clear it was not his intention for President Trump and other White House officials to use the document to justify firing Comey, which is what they have done. Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates had also warned the White House that Mr Flynn was potentially vulnerable to Russian extortion almost three weeks before he stepped down.
