Guterres urges Nigerians to embrace released Chibok school girls

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) - Nigeria's government is negotiating "seriously" for the release of more than 110 kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls still held by Boko Haram and will exchange more detained members of the extremist group for them if needed, an official said Thursday. "We've always made it clear that we will do everything in our power to ensure the freedom & safe return of our daughters" and all captives of Boko Haram, Buhari said on his Twitter account. He says he can not travel the long distance from his home in northern Nigeria to the capital without the government's invitation and assurance that he will see her.

The girls, ages 16 to 18, are believed to be among 276 forced from their beds by Boko Haram militants in the middle of the night in April 2014. Today, we learned that more girls have been freed by their captors, only to have to deal with publicity before getting to see their families.

He urged the government to put in more efforts to negotiate the release of the remaining girls in the captivity of the insurgents. Thousands of people have been kidnapped or killed in the group's eight-year insurgency, with millions driven from their homes.

Mr. Mohammed said: "What is paramount to us is the release of the remaining girls".
