Drinking just one glass of wine or other alcoholic drink a day increases the risk of developing breast cancer according to a new report

It's not always a good idea to go for that drink though as a new study revealed that even a single glass of alcohol daily could significantly increase the risk of breast cancer for women.

According to the report, "Drinking the equivalent of a small glass of wine or beer a day increases pre-menopausal breast cancer risk by five percent and post-menopausal breast cancer risk by nine percent".

Moreover, women who are overweight or obese, and those with greater adult weight gain, were found to be at greater risk of developing breast cancer after menopause, according to the findings. ❯❯ Save or Share this Page via. This comprehensive report included analysis of 119 studies with data on 12 million women and 260,000 cases of breast cancer.

On the positive side, vigorous exercise was associated with a 17 percent lower risk in pre-menopausal women, and a 10 percent lower risk in post-menopausal women. Age, early menstrual period and a family history of breast cancer are also well-known risk factors. But lifestyle factors can be modified to cut a person's risk.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, with over 252,000 new cases estimated this year.

Study authors say if a woman takes steps to curb her breast cancer risk, she'll not only lower her odds of developing cancer.

For pre-menopausal women, the risk increased 5 percent, and for post-menopausal women, it increased 9 percent. "Make simple food shifts to boost protection - substitute veggies like carrots, bell peppers or green salad for chips and crackers - and if you drink alcohol, stick to a single drink or less", Bender said.
