Iran's foreign minister slams Trump’s comments

Trump, wearing a black skullcap, on Monday became the first sitting president to visit the Western Wall.

In a statement following the meeting, Trump addressed his meetings the previous day with Arab and Muslim leaders in Saudi Arabia, and said that there is growing realization that they share a goal with Israel in their determination to defeat extremism and deter "the threat posed by Iran".

Incidentally, Trump too had mentioned during his campaigning days that he thought that Saudi Arabia was behind the 9/11 attacks. Yuval Steinitz, a senior Cabinet minister and Netanyahu confidant, called Saudi Arabia "a hostile country" and said the deal was "definitely something that should trouble us".

"The Trump administration is focused on materially enhancing the quality of life and the economy for the Palestinians", said Michael Oren, a parliament member and former Israeli ambassador to the USA, who now serves as an adviser at the prime minister's office.

The whole-hearted Trump tilt towards Saudi Arabia vis-a-vis Iran also complicates things for New Delhi, which tries to maintain equal distance between the two Islamic powers, in part because New Delhi has extensive trade ties with both, and India's syncretic Muslim population has large numbers of both Sunnis and Shias.

While there, Trump, along with Saudi King, and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, gathered at the opening of the Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology on Sunday. "New policies and concrete actions - not mere rhetoric - are what is needed to reset relations with the Muslim world".

Former Jordanian Justice Minister Ibrahim Aljazy said: "I would not call it a constructive tone since people in the region, particularly Jordanians, are looking for a more clear approach to the Israeli policies and an end to settlements, which may pave the way for a true two-state solution [with Palestine] and end of occupation".

Others imagined Trump's internal monologue while touching the orb. "I think it's in our national security interest to advocate for democracy and freedom and human rights", Sen. Marco Rubio told CNN's State of the Union. Many governments in these regions may strategically forgive the US president in exchange for his willingness to tolerate their human rights abuses, but ordinary people and especially the 65 percent under the age of 30 whom he highlighted are unlikely to do so.

Beheadings are common form of punishment in Saudi Arabia and women are forbidden to drive.

"Most importantly, the United States and Israel can declare with one voice that Iran must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon - never ever - and must cease its deadly funding, training, and equipping of terrorists and militias", said Trump, speaking at Israeli President Reuven Rivlin's residence, hours after he arrived in Israel.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have pledged $100 million (Dh367m) to a women's business fund supported by Ivanka Trump, daughter of the president who Monday wound up a visit to Riyadh.

A senior official who was part of the Palestinian delegation said Trump is planning to try to relaunch peace talks, with a goal of reaching an agreement within a year.

"It [Iran's] is a government that speaks openly of mass murder, vowing the destruction of Israel, death to America, and ruin for many leaders and nations in this room", said Trump in his speech, Financial Times reported.
