Who is Palestian President Mahmoud Abbas?

Trump again vowed that he was "personally committed" to helping the two sides reach a deal to end the decades-old conflict.

"I am truly hopeful that America can help Israel and the Palestinians forge peace and bring new hope to the region and its people", Trump said during a joint appearance in Bethlehem with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

"Mr. President, I appreciate the fact that you went to the Western Wall and you're the first acting President who's done that".

Rubio called Trump's trip and call for a peace process a "noble endeavor" that every president has tried for years, and it has never worked because there are too many definitions behind what that peace would involve. "Making peace, however, will not be easy".

Mr Trump's visit to Jerusalem has been laden with religious symbolism.

"And we know that peace is possible if we put aside the pain and disagreements of the past and commit together to finally resolving this crisis", the president said during his first trip to Israel as commander-in-chief.

Both Mr Netanyahu and Mr Abbas, however, lavished praise on Mr Trump during his short visit.

Speaking at the Prime Minister's residence Tuesday, while hosting Trump, Netanyahu said he looked forward to "working closely" with the Trump administration to advance peace in the region, "because you [Trump] have noted so succinctly that common dangers are turning former enemies into partners".

Mr Trump's visit was less enthusiastically welcomed by sections of Palestinian society.

In planning for Trump's visit to Israel, the USA delegation rejected a request that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accompany him to the Western Wall, telling the Israelis it is "not your territory".

Trump delivered the speech to an audience that included senior Israeli ministers, Jewish and Christian dignitaries and Sheldon Adeslon, the American businessman who backs Trump and whose Israeli free daily newspaper is considered pro-Netanyahu.

The Islamic State claimed credit for the attack and the slaying of "crusaders".

Trump, on his first trip overseas since taking office in January, is seeking progress toward what he has called the "ultimate deal" - a peace pact between Israelis and Palestinians. He's also backed away from his campaign pledge to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israel considers the entire city its united capital. Tonight, Trump is flying to the Vatican, where he's slated to meet with Pope Francis on Wednesday.
