House Speaker Paul Ryan says Gianforte should apologize

The Republican "violated that pledge [to uphold Montana values] when he attacked a reporter for doing his job Wednesday night", the Missoulian wrote.

He said he trusted that investigators had made the right decision on how to handle the case.

"Reporters are subject to abuse all the time". Twice it seemed someone picked up then immediately hung up. A sign on a gate thanked people for not trespassing at Gianforte's home.

Gianforte: "Speak with Shane, please". MSNBC's "MTP Daily" says he canceled on the show. Mr Gianforte, despite being overheard praising the Republican plan to lobbyists, had publicly said he was reserving judgment on it, pending the CBO's verdict. After all, an assault charge against a candidate for Montana's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives is not the type of breaking national news any resident of this pleasant state wants to wake up to.

Gianforte says he supports the effort to repeal Obamacare but has not backed the Republican bill passed by the House. Quist, a folk singer, has come within striking distance thanks to an outpouring of money and energy from Democrats desperate to score a victory against Trump.

The audio recording establishes that Gianforte never asked Jacobs to lower his recorder. "That was outrageous", Pelosi said.

But Ryan wouldn't say if Greg Gianforte should be barred from joining the House GOP conference if he wins Thursday's election.

The candidate says that reporter tried to push a phone in his face before this happened. Remorse has a place in a civilized society, because it causes people to rethink what they did and hopefully broach future problems in different ways.

Stivers said: "From what I know of Greg Gianforte, this was totally out of character, but we all make mistakes".

This vote, like the special House election to be held in Georgia next month, has been seen as a bellwether for the effect President Trump and his constant controversies could have on the Republican Party, which controls both parts of Congress.

My Montana source also reports that it is likely that about three-quarters of the votes are already in through absentee voting, so it's possible that Gianforte will still win.

Montanans can register to vote and vote on the same day so the 700,000 overall registered voters could rise.

"You just body slammed me and broke my glasses", Jacobs said moments later.

- A West Virginia journalist was arrested after yelling questions about the opioid epidemic at U.S. Health Secretary Tom Price.

A few lawmakers did comment.

California Republican Duncan Hunter said that assaulting a journalist is appropriate if "the reporter deserved it". It's not appropriate behavior. "Unless the reporter deserved it." Rep.

Gianforte was charged with assault.

But eye witness accounts contradicted that version of events.

"He took me to the ground", Jacobs said of the attack. It was only a little over a year ago that Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was charged for assaulting a reporter at a campaign event.

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him.

Gianforte's campaign didn't deny Jacobs' claim, but countered with its own statement that the reporter had provoked the altercation.

Gianforte secured the nomination for the U.S. House seat on the first ballot of a party nominating convention. He would not answer questions about why he contributed or whether he regularly donates to campaigns, saying that "doesn't have anything to do with the incident". The statement added that Mr Jacobs' injuries did not meet the legal definition of felony assault.
