Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that the FBI is investigating meetings that President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had in December with Russian officials.

The House Intelligence Committee will subpoena former Trump adviser Michael Flynn after he refused to cooperate with the panel's investigation into Trump campaign ties with Russian Federation.

Yesterday Flynn's lawyers said that the committee's subpoena was overly broad and that complying with them would "feed the escalating public frenzy against him".

House oversight committee chairman Jason Chaffetz told acting Federal Bureau of Investigation director Andrew McCabe that he wants records of Mr Comey's contacts with the White House and Justice Department dating to September 2013, when Mr Comey was sworn in as Federal Bureau of Investigation director under president Barack Obama.

"I know what the Russians try to do", he told the committee. "But I know there was a basis to have individuals pull those threads".

One subpoena has been served.

"I told Mr. Bortnikov that if Russian Federation had such a campaign underway, it would be certain to backfire", Brennan said.

According to the Washington Post, Kushner is being investigated over his meetings - in December and possibly on other occasions - with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and Russian banker Sergey Gorkov.

The Rhode Island Democrat said there are number of factors that suggest Flynn is working the Justice Department in its probe.

This source says both Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump wanted Flynn in as national security adviser. The committee's leaders responded by issuing two new subpoenas directed at Flynn's businesses, which Senator Mark Warner, the ranking member, believes do not have the ability to plead the Fifth.

The committee has subpoenaed Flynn, and two of his businesses, for information in conjunction with their Russian Federation probe. Everything but immunity, he added. In March, a Senate intelligence committee rejected his bid to strike a deal for immunity from prosecution in exchange for testimony into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The FBI says it needs more time to consider a request by Congress to turn over memos and other documents related to meetings between former FBI Director James Comey and President Donald Trump.

Back home, the Director of National Intelligence and Director of the National Security Agency testify today separately.

During the election campaign, Trump also questioned why some former Clinton staffers would invoke the Fifth Amendment.

Manafort quit the Trump campaign following a chaotic run and amid reports of his own business deals with Russia-aligned officials in Ukraine.

Brennan said that while he was Central Intelligence Agency director he shared classified information with Russian Federation and other nations about threats related to terrorism. Details of the conversations, some of which have not been previously reported, add to an increasing understanding of the alarm inside the American government a year ago about the Russian disruption campaign.
