James Comey agrees to testify in open Senate hearing

While it is unknown whether the President has either tapes or notes of his conversations with Comey, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director kept meticulous memos and shared them with his team contemporaneously.

The Times reported Trump noted the Russia investigation as he told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak of his decision to fire Comey.

If the White House couldn't get Mueller removed, they'd use the rule to cast doubt on his impartiality, according to Reuters:"Under this strategy, the sources said the administration would raise the issue in press conferences and public statements", Julia Edwards Ainsley reported.

Mr. Comey's friends disclosing contents of a memo he wrote following a February dinner conversation with President Trump, in which the president asked Mr. Comey to drop the criminal investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael T. Flynn.

The White House on Friday predicted that the investigation would back up Mr Trump's account.

President Donald Trump abruptly fired Comey on May 9, dramatically ousting the nation's top law enforcement official in the midst of an FBI investigation into whether Trump's campaign had ties to Russia's meddling in the election that sent him to the White House.

The report cited notes from a May 10 Oval Office meeting - the day after Mr Trump fired Mr Comey. One official read quotations to The Times, and a second official confirmed the broad outlines of the discussion.

The White House did not deny the New York Times" report, but instead blamed Comey for putting "unnecessary pressure' on diplomacy between the USA and Russian Federation. The investigation would have always continued, and obviously, the termination of Comey would not have ended it.

"Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations, he added".

The elder Comey's comments come amidst the news that his son will be testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee in an open session sometime after the Memorial Day holiday.

"Director Comey served his country with honour for many years, and he deserves an opportunity to tell his story".

Trump had ignited political firestorm the previous week when he fired Comey, who was running the investigation.

Multiple media reports later claimed that Trump disclosed sensitive intelligence obtained from the Israelis to the Russians during the meeting. Trump later defended the disclosure, saying he shared "facts" with the Russians amid the mutual fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). On Wednesday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Comey's predecessor, Robert Mueller, to serve as special counsel overseeing the Russian Federation probe. This is an uncharacteristically bold step from a man who once desired to avoid confrontation with Trump so greatly that he tried to blend into his surroundings to escape the president's notice. Trump has denied any collusion.
