US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is willing to co-operate with federal investigators looking into ties between Russia and the Trump campaign, his attorney said Thursday, after reports emerged that the FBI was investigating meetings Kushner had in December with Russian officials.

The Post said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is particularly interested in meetings Kushner held in December with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, and a Russian banker with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin named Sergey Gorkov.

When CNN contacted a Kushner spokesman on Tuesday, the spokesman said Kushner was unaware of the FBI's interest in him and hasn't been contacted.

In addition to possible coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election, investigators are also looking broadly into possible financial crimes - but the people familiar with the matter, who were not authorized to speak publicly, did not specify who or what was being examined.

According to NBC, Kushner's lawyer says the 36-year-old has already volunteered to share what he knows with Congress if he is asked to do so. "He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry", a statement from attorney Jamie Gorelick said.

The probe is headed by former FBI director Robert Mueller, appointed special counsel with broad powers to investigate Russian election meddling and possible collusion with the Trump campaign after the president sacked FBI director James Comey, who was heading the investigation, earlier this month.

The focus of their interest in Kushner - one of Trump's most trusted senior White House advisors - seems to be a series of meetings Jared hosted in December with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and a high-ranking Russian banker based in Moscow. Also, The Washington Post has not been told that Kushner is a "target" of the investigation, a word that generally refers to someone who is the main suspect.

The FBI declined to comment.

Kushner met at least once in December with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, and he also met past year with a Russian banker, Sergey Gorkov. Flynn, along with former Trump campaign associates Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Carter Page, are active subjects of the investigation. A source close to Kushner denied that he pushed for Flynn.

There is no indication Kushner is now a target of the probe and there are no allegations he committed any wrongdoing.

The president last week declared himself the victim of the "greatest witch hunt" in American political history.
