The Bridge which is India's longest, over nine kilometres long, will be inaugurated tomorrow in Assam by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his government completes three years in office.

What is most important about this 9.15-km-long three-lane bridge is that it brings mainland India all that closer to China, spanning as it does over the Lohit - a tributary to the wide and voluminous Brahmaputra River.

It is to be mentioned at here that the statue of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, being erected at Bolung Village by the Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society, for which Government of Arunachal Pradesh had gracefully provided fund, will be passing through the Dhola - Sadiya Bridge on the date of the inauguration of the said bridge on way from Guwahati to Bolung Village. This will result in saving of petrol and diesel worth Rs 10 lakh per day, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways today said. Currently, it takes six hours to travel from Rupai to Meka, and the bridge will reduce the travel time to an hour.

The bridge will also benefit the army, with convoys requiring less time to journey from Assam to the posts along the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh. The design of the bridge is such that it can even accommodate and withstand the movement of military tanks weighing 60 tonnes.

The construction of this 9.15-km-long bridge began in 2011 under public private partnership.

The Ministry said the new bridge promises to usher in prosperity in the northeastern region and would provide efficient road connectivity to the remote and backward areas, which have poor road infrastructure. It is located 540 km away from Assam capital Dispur and 300 km away from Arunachal Pradesh capital Itanagar.

The brige links Dhola to Sadia in Assam, and once open will improve road connectivity in the region as the only means to cross the Brahmaputra at this location till now has been by ferry. However, it got delayed by two years.

As there is no civilian airport in Arunachal Pradesh, this bridge will help people of the state to reach the nearest rail head in Tinsukia and the airport in Dibrugarh easily. Currently, the only route for people looking to travel from this part of Assam to Arunachal is by boat.
