Pope Francis Met With Donald Trump

He even made a light-hearted jest, asking Melania Trump "What do you feed him, putizza?" - a reference to a well-known dessert from her native Slovenia.

This is Mr Trump's first visit to Europe since taking office in January. Reporters in the room thought initially that the First Lady had replied "Pizza!"

Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for the first lady, said Mrs Trump's decision to wear a black lace veil known as a mantilla followed Vatican protocol that women who have an audience with the pope must wear long sleeves, formal black clothing and a veil to cover their head.

After the meeting between President Trump and the Pope, the Vatican said there had been an "exchange of views" on global issues.

On global affairs, their "exchange of views" covered the "promotion of peace in the world through political negotiation and interreligious dialogue", and highlighted the need to protect Christian communities in the Middle East. Mr Trump gave the Pope a boxed set of writings by the civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

But there remains much that divides the two men, from their views on capitalism and refugees to climate change and the building of the border wall.

At one point, the Pope jokingly asked Melania, "what she fed her husband", the Guardian reported. "It's symbol of peace".

Francis's gift included a signed copy of his recent World Day of Peace message and three writings, one of which was Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home, all about climate change. The Times notes it's "the first papal encyclical focused exclusively on the environment".

He also presented him with a small sculptured olive tree, telling Mr Trump through an interpreter: "It is my desire that you become an olive tree to construct peace".

At an earlier news conference, the Pope said he wouldn't judge Trump before their meeting or seek to convert him on political issues.

Asked afterwards how the meeting went, the President said: "Great". We had a fantastic meeting and we had a fantastic tour, it was really handsome.

Trump arrived at the Vatican just before 2:30 a.m. EDT, along with wife Melania, daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner to meet Pope Francis.

He then visited the Sistine Chapel before leaving the Vatican for meetings with Paolo Gentiloni, the Italian prime minister, and Sergio Mattarella, the president.

In one of the lighter moments of his meeting with the United States president at the Vatican on Wednesday, Francis made an apparent allusion to Trump's imposing physical size.

On Friday, Trump will meet with other world leaders in the coastal town of Taormina, Sicily, for the G7 summit.
