Senate Intelligence Committee Using Subpoenas To Pursue Russia Probe

Former CIA Director John Brennan tesifies on Capitol Hill in Washington

Former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director John Brennan said on Tuesday that he became increasingly concerned last summer over contacts between US President Donald Trump's campaign officials and Moscow, as a Russian effort to interfere with the US presidential election became evident.

In a statement to reporters regarding the subpoenas, panel vice chairman Mark Warner said on Tuesday that the committee disagrees "with General Flynn's lawyers' interpretation of taking the Fifth".

The committee has tried another way to receive the documents by issuing two subpoenas for two of Flynn's former businesses.

Earlier this week, Flynn's lawyers said he would refuse separate Senate subpoenas for any records about his former business dealings with Russian Federation, citing his constitutional right to avoid self-incrimination.

In response, Burr and Warner said the committee has been reviewing a range of options to compel Flynn to release the documents.

"That's not our preference today".

"I hope Gen.Flynn decides to comply with our Intel Committee subpoena to produce business documents". "We're allowing him that opportunity".

Attorney General Sessions To Appeal Trump Travel-ban Case To Supreme Court
Omar Jadwat is the director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project and argued the case before the 4th U.S. A federal judge in Hawaii has also halted that provision and the freeze on the USA refugee program.

Flynn's attorneys did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly interrupted meetings about other subjects to complain about former FBI Director James Comey and the investigation into Russia's interference in the USA election, according to a Politico report published on Thursday.

As Ed noted yesterday, Gen. Michael Flynn said he would plead the 5th Amendment rather than testify or deliver documents to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

He was sacked from his position at the White House in February, after less than a month on the job, for failing to disclose the content of talks with Sergei Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the United States, and misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations. Both he and Mr Flynn have denied any collusion with Russian Federation or involvement in any plot to disrupt the election.

The Post reported Monday that President Trump asked two senior intelligence officials, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers, to declare publicly that there was no evidence of collusion between the president's campaign and the Russians. Those subpoenas: "one is been served, one is in the process of being served", Warner said on Tuesday.

The House Intelligence Committee subpoenas would be the first by the House panel targeting Flynn, who faces potential criminal charges for a number of actions, including failure to register as a foreign agent and failure to seek Pentagon permission to receive money for a Moscow speaking engagement.

He said the most immediate step for himself and his staff was to draw up new subpoenas, but added that they would be doing research about what to do should they "have to go the route of contempt".
