Trump, G7 peers seek deals on terrorism, trade, climate

Republican Greg Gianforte won his race despite having been charged with misdemeanor assault after allegedly slamming a reporter to the ground.

Meredith Lilly, a professor of worldwide affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa, said it might be over-reaching to portray Trudeau as some kind of Trump whisperer - especially since this is only his second G7 summit.

G7 leaders held annual summit talks Friday with divisions on trade and climate change, and fresh friction surrounding Donald Trump, threatening to undermine a show of unity against jihadist terrorism.

President Trump is in Sicily, Italy for a two-day Group of Seven summit where he plans to discuss terrorism, economic growth and world security with 6 of the world's most powerful leaders.

"There is one open question, which is the USA position on the Paris climate accords", Gentiloni told reporters, referring to a 2015 deal on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Cohn told reporters that Trump was struck by "how important it is for the United States to show leadership" and how even in massive global agreements, there's "a big gap when you take the biggest economy out".

The bloc gathers annually to discuss issues including global economy, security and energy and this year's talks are touted to be "robust" and "challenging" after president Trump dressed down North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders for not spending enough on defence.

Despite the tight security in Taormina for the G7, Trump insisted on meeting residents in the town as he returned from the summit at lunchtime to the luxury San Domenico Palace Hotel. Trip has been very successful. The trip kicked off in Saudi Arabia, then Israel, after which he met Pope for a Holy See at the Vatican, after which he met the heads of European Union institutions and attended the NATO Summit in Brussels.

Summit protesters were isolated a few miles away, with one group urging Trump not to abandon the Paris Climate Accord.

Since the group's meeting past year, Britain has made a decision to leave the European Union.

A Canadian government official with knowledge of the negotiations said global trade and the Paris agreement on climate change - which Trump could back out of - remain major sticking points that will likely keep talks going through the night.

"Canada believes very strongly in a rules-based worldwide trading order".

The chairman of the European Union's council says he agrees with President Donald Trump that the worldwide community should be "tough, even brutal" on terrorism and Islamic State.

Tusk spoke at the start of a meeting of the Group of Seven democracies in Taormina, Sicily.

A German government spokesman says trade surpluses like the one that's provoking President Donald Trump's ire are the result of market factors and are "neither good nor bad".

Juncker tried to play down the comments ahead of the summit.

John Kirton, director of the G7 Research Group at the University of Toronto, said the meetings are flawless for someone like Trump, who loves to be involved in making deals.

The G7 no longer represents all of the world's leading economies. They said they would work also with youth and religious leaders, prisons and educational institutions toward that end.

May, in Italy for her first G7 meeting since becoming prime minister previous year, was set to urge the world's major industrialised nations to encourage technology firms to stop militants moving "from the battlefield to the internet". In a video that became viral, Trump also appeared to push aside the prime minister of Montenegro.
