In Tral, security forces laid a cordon on Friday evening around a house in Saimu village where Bhat and one or two other terrorists were hiding.

"Yes, both of them were gunned down", police chief Shesh Pal Vaid told the AFP news agency.

Witnesses and villagers disputed the police claim.

Bhat succeeded charismatic militant leader Burhan Wani after he was killed in a gunfight in July, which triggered months of anti-India protests in which almost 100 people died.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was holding a meeting of top security and intelligence officials to ensure that the situation does not flare up like it did in the aftermath of Burhan Wani's killing a year ago when 94 civilian protesters were killed in the almost six-month long unrest that followed.

A 27-year-old man was killed during a demonstration that erupted when security forces were returning from the scene of the gunfight in Soimoh, about 40 km from Srinagar.

As the news of the Sabzar's killing spread, thousands of people, including students, took to the streets shouting "Go India, go back" and "We want freedom". At least 30 people have been injured in the clashes between protesters and security forces in different parts of the Valley. He was responsible for killing civilians after branding them "police informers". There were also reports of clashes elsewhere in Pulwama district and in Shopian, Anantnag, and Sopore, among others. However, despite tense situation people joined special Taraweeh prayers last night in mosques, khankhas, Jamia Masjids and shrines across the Valley, including Srinagar.

Dozens of civilians were reportedly injured in the clashes.

"Relentless operations by security forces have defeated desperate attempts by Pakistan and Pakistan-sponsored agents to spread terror in the state in the run up to the holy month of Ramzan", the defence spokesman of the Northern Command said.

Internet services, restored for a brief period before Bhat's killing, remain suspended in the Valley as do train services between Baramulla and Bannihal.

A masked Kashmiri protester throws rocks at Indian policemen in Srinagar, Friday, May 26, 2017. The two were childhood friends and Sabzar followed Burhan in joining the Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest militant group based in Kashmir.

Pakistan strongly condemned the "martyrdom of 12 Kashmiri youths" in IOK.

Clashes, however, continued across the valley, causing a government clampdown on Internet services in the region once again. Despite the blackout, however, the atrocities were being reported by the Indian and global media, he said.

Aziz reaffirmed Pakistan's unflinching support for Kashmiris in their just struggle for the right to self-determination as promised to them in the relevant UN Security Council's Resolutions. A small sliver of Kashmir is also held by China.

"Afterwards JKLF chairman along with many others walking on foot for many miles reached Ratsuna, visited the bereaved mother and other family members of Martyr Sabzar Ahmad and expressed solidarity with them".
