Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg receives Harvard degree 12 years after dropping out

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, one of Harvard's most famous dropouts, this week returned to the Ivy League school to pick up his degree - albeit only an honorary one - 12 years after quitting.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has called for a universal basic income to boost personal potential and build economic growth. Rich people like he will.

"You're graduating at a time when this is especially important", Zuckerberg said in the prepared remarks. My parents drove up here to help me pack my stuff. "But today, technology and automation are eliminating many jobs. Membership in a lot of communities has been declining, and a lot of people are feeling disconnected and depressed, and are trying to fill a void in their lives".

Upon receiving the degree, the 33-year-old delivered a commencement speech to the Class of 2017 touching upon politics, immigration, universal basic income, jobs, racism and healthcare.

"We are going to have to have a societal conversation about how we manage this", Obama said then.

"I can't even say his name because I don't want to put him at risk" of deportation, Zuckerberg said. It was there that he coded and launched the original Facebook website, thefacebook.com, before dropping out in his sophomore year to further his pursuits at the fledgling company.

Society should measure progress not just by economic metrics, but by how many people find a meaningful goal, Zuckerberg said.

If you're wondering what he actually had to say and not still laughing at the fake headlines above, he banged on about how robots and automation are probably going to have a big impact on jobs. "Instead, I'm here to tell you finding your objective isn't enough".

He said that this generation will deal with the job cuts that will be brought about automation in sectors like auto.

Zuckerberg talked about pursuing "big meaningful" projects, citing the space program and Hoover Dam as examples from past generations. Citing global problems including climate change and pandemics, Zuckerberg said that millennials, himself included, understand themselves as global citizens rather than belonging to any nation-state.

In a speech to Harvard graduates on Thursday, Facebook Founder, Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said it's not enough for young people to find their own objective in life - they should "create a world where everyone has a sense of goal".

"So what are we waiting for?" Now it's our time to define a new social contract for our generation. "Let's give everyone the freedom to pursue their goal - not only because it's the right thing to do, but because when more people can turn their dreams into something great, we're all better for it".
