G-7 commits to climate change deal - except for Trump

President Trump on Saturday at the G-7 Summit in Italy declined to join six other leading nations in their pledge to uphold the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

Trump used his trip to promote "America First" policies, promoting $110 billion worth of arms sales to Saudi Arabia and telling G-7 allies that the United States needs a more level playing field on trade.

U.S. President Donald Trump arrives for a photo of G7 leaders with African leaders on the last day of the summit on Saturday.

This story is developing.

The US President told leaders of the G7 countries that they would have to wait until next week for his decision on whether America would honour its undertakings under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the longest-serving G-7 leader, pushed hard against offering the US concessions to secure agreement on climate change, and appeared concerned about what it all meant.

"His views are evolving, he came here to learn and get smarter, " said Gary Cohn, national economic council director, when asked about the president's views on the climate agreement.

The joint communique made clear that all the G-7 nations except the United States remained determined to carry out the Paris agreement.

Macron said he told Trump it is "indispensable for the reputation of the United States and the interest of the Americans themselves that the United States remain committed" to the Paris agreement.

Leaders gathering at the G7 Summit in Taormina, Italy agreed on a final communique.

Trump held no news conferences during the nine-day trip, which allowed him to avoid questions about the Russian Federation investigations.

Trump's pending review of USA climate policies has left environmentalists bracing for the possibility of bland G-7 promises that say little after years of increasingly stronger commitments to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Marcon and Trump were both attending a G-7 summit for the first time. Another, calling itself "Women Against Trump", planned to protest what marchers said was the president's "sexism".

Another US foreign policy expert, Derek Chollet, says it was no coincidence that the mood of the trip "changed dramatically when Trump left the controlled confines of the Middle East".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made his major debut on the worldwide stage at a United Nations global warming conference in Paris, where the new Liberal government, crowing cheerfully that Canada was back, helped to seal a major climate deal.

Meanwhile, President Trump, who in the past has exuded skepticism about climate change and threatened to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement, tweeted on Saturday that he would make a decision about the climate accord next week. "It was implicit in the speech", McMaster said of Trump's address to the alliance, in which he recalled that Article 5 had only once been invoked, following the September 2001 terrorist attack in the United States.

European Union nations are eager for a clear US pledge "to fight all forms of protectionism", said the diplomat, who declined to be named.

The G7 leaders were heavily criticised by NGOs for failing to tackle the migration crisis, chaos in Libya and looming famines in Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria and Yemen, where 20 million people are in danger of starvation as a result of conflicts and drought.

"In Europe, where the leaders were less fawning and the press less forgiving, Trump got himself into trouble". Trump wasn't swayed by arguments from Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, France's President Emmanuel Macron and others to honor the Paris agreement, agreed upon in 2015 by nearly 200 nations to cut fossil fuel emissions and boost funding to ease the effects of global warming.
