G7 leaders agree to fight protectionism, but U.S

Trump told Macron he is under "heavy" pressure back in the US on the climate accord brokered by the Obama administration in 2015.

A senior Italian diplomat said Trump and the heads of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Canada saw eye-to-eye on many issues ahead of the two-day summit, but Washington remained isolated on commerce and the environment.

The rest of the world was walking strong and united together, while the exhausted old United States was puttering along behind in a golf cart.

Trump spoke to service members and their families at the end of his first overseas trip as president, and he detailed the trip to them, according to the Department.

Donald Trump is the embodiment of an America that is falling behind, while the rest of the world is passing him by. In a dig at Trump, he invited American climate scientists who felt alienated by the Republican administration to come to France to work.

In a striking comment given Trump's support during the campaign for American coal miners, Cohn also said "coal doesn't even really make that much sense anymore as a feedstock". "Money is starting to pour in", Trump said, echoing a tweet earlier today on the subject.

It's unclear if the pope pressed Trump specifically on the Paris accord in their private meeting.

Aides to Trump said he was listening with an open mind to the other leaders' arguments about Paris, but had yet to decide whether to withdraw the U.S. from the pact.

Friends of the Earth CEO Craig Bennett said Mr Trump - who once dismissed man-made climate change as a Chinese-inspired hoax - risked turning the U.S. into a "pariah state" unless he finally came out in support of the Agreement, which aims to stop global temperatures from rising more than two degrees centigrade and was accepted by his predecessor Barack Obama a year ago.

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that the discussions were "intense" and the other nations sided with the pledge.

However, White House officials said Friday the president's views on climate change were "evolving".

In a statement, Gary Cohn, one of Trump's senior economic advisors, said the talks in Taormina were having an impact on the USA president.

The other six nations in the Group of Seven agreed to stick with their commitment to implement the 2015 Paris deal that aims to slow down global warming.

The announcement came as Trump departed this year's G-7 summit in Italy without endorsing the landmark global warming deal which has support from almost 200 countries, a move that put him in conflict with his counterparts from the world's other leading democracies.

"He came here to learn", Cohn said at the G7 summit.

G7 leaders also found agreement on other points, such as backing closer co-operation against terrorism after the concert bombing Monday in Manchester that killed 22 people.

Trump has previously expressed skepticism about climate change.

Merkel, by contrast, was attending her 12th such gathering, and clearly believed she had overcome climate change scepticism at a 2007 summit, when she convinced the then U.S. President George W. Bush to pursue substantial cuts in greenhouse gases.

Another US foreign policy expert, Derek Chollet, says it was no coincidence that the mood of the trip "changed dramatically when Trump left the controlled confines of the Middle East".

Merkel said Friday at the summit that it's well known that Germany sells more to the USA than it buys from America, "which on the one hand has to do with the quality of our goods", but noted that there is also a lot of German direct investment in the U.S.
