News of Brzezinski's death was announced by his daughter, who posted an image on her Instagram account showing her father with two of his granddaughters. She said he died "peacefully" but did not give a cause. But to normal people around the world, Brzezinsky was more known as a deranged person whose rabid anti-Russian rhetoric persisted for 50 years.

While critical of the Soviets' communist agenda, Brzezinski supported an improvement of ties between the U.S. and China. -Soviet accord to curb conventional forces in Europe.

He was a strong opponent of the Soviet Union and supported funding anti-Soviet militants in Afghanistan. "He was inquisitive, innovative, and a natural choice as my national security advisor when I became president", Carter said in the statement.

Former President Barack Obama called Brzezinski "an accomplished public servant, a powerful intellect, and a passionate advocate for American leadership".

After President Carter lost to Ronald Regan in 1981, Mr Brzezinski turned to other things, including becoming a consultant on worldwide affairs and a senior adviser for the Georgetown Center for Strategic and global Studies in Washington.

A life-long Democrat, he broke with party ranks to endorse George H.W. Bush and served on his National Security Council-Defense Department Commission as well as his Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Having studied Zbig's impressive background and his scholarly and political writings, I called on him to advise me on foreign policy issues during my first presidential campaign.

Brzezinski's view of the Soviet Union may have been colored by his childhood experiences.

He later taught at Harvard and Columbia University, and became a US citizen in 1958. When Communists took power in Poland six years later, he retired and moved his family to a farm in the Canadian countryside.

Brzezinski helped Carter bridge wide gaps between the rigid Egyptian and Israeli leaders, Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin, leading to the Camp David accords. The Iranian hostage crisis also was under Brzezinski's watch.

Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, right, testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during a hearing July 9, 2014 in Washington. Mr Brzezinski, during the early months of 1980, became convinced that negotiations to free the kidnapped Americans were going nowhere. The mission never reached the hostages, and eight servicemen died when their aircraft crashed.

He also taught American foreign policy at Johns Hopkins University.

After serving in the Carter administration, Brzezinski continued to be a major voice in U.S. foreign policy.
