Castroneves runs near-perfect race, ends 2nd again at Indy

Four other cars-including that of 2014 Indy 500 victor Ryan Hunter-Reay-failed to finish due to mechanical issues, while nine more were knocked out of contention in a series of crashes that wiped out some of the other big names in the race, including pole-sitter Scott Dixon and 2014 IndyCar Series champ Will Power.

"I ducked and closed my eyes", he laughed. When I open, I was in the grass.

"Unbelievable, " Sato said of the finish against Castroneves. "I would consider coming back here to race now that I know all the procedures".

"Just a little beaten up there".

"When we stopped because of the red flag, we noticed that there was the winglet broken and the front wing was broken, too".

A penalty hit the No. 3 on the ensuing restart, as he was busted for passing before the green flag on lap 60.

"I had to make a decision on which way to go", he said of the incident.

"I was pointing in the right direction into (Turn) One", he said.

There was at least one very happy face in victory lane, though. I would like to see some reviews. "As soon as I started turning, the auto started pushing". “We had a great shot. "They worked their tails off, we saw it all today". It seems hard to believe that Dixon's only tasted Indy 500 victory once in a glittering career, given how often he's been at the pointy end at IMS. With five laps to go, Sato passed Castroneves for the lead, and did not relinquish it.

"With three laps to go I really didn't know but I just knew I had to go for it!" "I was hoping Jay would stay against the wall". Man, he just took off and that's it. "That was my last chance".

Takuma Sato, 40, had the engine to win the 101st Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, giving team owner Michael Andretti his second straight Indy win, his third in four years and fifth overall. "To say I'm unhappy is an understatement". "My race was pretty adventurous", he said.

"And at the end of the day, if we're all the best, then we just have to fight each other, which is a good thing". So whether it was the first attempt or eighth attempt or you had a drama in the past, it doesn't really matter. It was pretty good. "I'd already picked that way to go and there was nowhere else to try and avoid him".

It's all relevant to whom you're competing against, it seems, but think about it: A standard chassis and fairly standard engine, rather than all different types of performance and a bad McLaren-Honda engine, seems like a better platform to judge a driver's capabilities on than the current scene in F1. I did everything I could, trust me, everything I could. Yes, finishing second again (expletive). So close to get the fourth. "I'm really trying. I'm not giving up this dream and I know it's going to happen".

Alonso expects better results for McLaren in the second half of the F1 season. I think not many race-car drivers in this world are fearless enough to do what Fernando just did. "Big thanks to the Holmatro Safety Team, INDYCAR and Dallara and everyone for the safety standards we have on these cars". Hey, there is always a positive note. From a fan perspective, I think IndyCar is on the leading edge with that technology, so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes in the future, but as far as driver aids, hopefully they keep that to a minimum.
