Seeded Kerber loses in first round of French Open

The German became the first top seeded woman to lose in the opening round of the French Open since the sport turned professional in 1968 - and the disparity between the players in her Russian opponent's favour was as wide as the scoreline suggests. Kerber lost her opener in Stuttgart where she was the defending champion, suffered a thigh injury in the third round in Madrid and lost first time out in Rome.

Kerber lost in the first round at Roland Garros previous year when she was seeded third behind Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska. "If you are losing a lot of first rounds now, especially on clay, which is not my best surface, the confidence is not there like when I'm playing on hard or if you win a little bit more matches", she explains.

To say Kvitova exceeded all expectations is an understatement. "I will maybe take a few days' rest".

Kvitova suffered career-threatening damage to the tendons and nerves in her left hand when she was stabbed by an intruder in December, but she has battled back and made her WTA Tour return on Sunday.

The 29-year-old admits it hasn't been easy to enjoy herself on court these days, and that the problem is both technical and mental.

Leading 5-2 into her service, Makarova sealed the victory with a powerful forehand to deny Kerber's quest for the Suzanne Lenglen trophy. I mean, the pressure is always there. Indeed, she only regained her number one ranking after America's Serena Williams announced she was taking time off from the game as she expects the birth of her first child. The 31st-seeded Vinci, most famous for ending Williams' hopes of a calendar year Grand Slam by beating her in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 2015, lost to Rio Olympics gold medalist Monica Puig 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. "And the expectations are also from me really big, of course, because I know what I can do, what I did a year ago", said Kerber, who won two of the three major finals she reached in 2016.

I have to find myself again and try to forget the clay season as soon as possible, and reset for the grass season again.

Meanwhile, Czech Petra Kvitova advanced to French Open second round, winning her first match against American player Julia Boserups in her comeback match after a left-hand surgery.

"Thank you for everything, you helped me through this hard time".
