Trump still 'wide open' on climate change, Pentagon chief says

Trump on Saturday wrote on Twitter that he would make his final decision next week on whether the USA would remain in the climate accord, an worldwide agreement to curb carbon emissions.

It was a meeting of mixed outcome with Trump and his G7 colleagues finally agreeing on trade/protectionism but not climate change.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis told CBS Face the Nation, in an interview set to air on Sunday, that he sat in on some policy discussions on the issue while in Brussels and that President Trump is "wide open on this issue as he takes in the pros and cons of that accord".

On Saturday night, Axios reported the news based on "three sources with direct knowledge".

"Having been a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officer, under President Bush and President Obama, and then having been back there in Brussels representing the Department of Defense under President Trump ... this is a consistent message that we have given the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations", Mattis said.

The White House did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.

"I will make my final decision on the Paris Accord next week!".

Mr Trump, who has previously called global warming a hoax, came under concerted pressure from the other leaders to honour the 2015 Paris Agreement on curbing carbon emissions.

"Understanding this process, the heads of state and of government of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom and the presidents of the European Council and of the European Commission reaffirm their strong commitment to swiftly implement the Paris Agreement".

Although he tweeted that he would make a decision next week, his apparent reluctance to embrace the first legally binding global climate deal that was signed by 195 countries clearly annoyed German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

At the G7 summit in Italy, Trump was the odd one out on climate issues. But after the meeting, she called the talks with Trump "very unsatisfying".

In order to do that, countries pledged to reduce their carbon emissions.
