Vettel emulates Schumacher as Ferrari end Monaco jinx

Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton salvaged a top 10 points-scoring position in the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix following Saturday's qualifying disappointment.

Team mate Kimi Raikkonen, on pole for the first time in nine years, lost out in the pitstops but secured a Ferrari one-two with Hamilton finishing seventh for Mercedes after starting 13th.

It was also the 29-year-old German's second Monaco triumph, his third win this year and the 45th of his career, lifting him 25 points clear of Hamilton of Mercedes in the title race.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was third, saying afterwards that he felt it was nearly a redemption for missing out on a win past year having started on pole.

More than at any other track on the calendar, "could", "should" and "would" count for little, for in this insane town made famous by its casino, it is often a question of those willing to gamble and those with luck on their side.

"It's still second place but it doesn't feel bad good", he said.

It was the 82nd 1-2 in the team's history and celebrated noisily by the tifosi who had thronged into the circuit overnight.

"I was able to use that window to come ahead and after that I could control the race". Obviously they had reasons, as in any other race, but I can not really answer that.

Bourdais still can't put any weight on his right leg for five weeks, but he is targeting he season-ending race at Sonoma to get back in his vehicle.

Nico Rosberg, the reigning world champion who was conducting the post-race interviews, said: "I know how it feels".

Wolff added: "As for Lewis, he did a great job to take every opportunity that came his way and climb to P7, which was the maximum of our expectations for him today".

A bungled pit-stop saw him lose his lead past year. What we did today was pretty much the best possible - at least what we could do in qualifying. I can understand why he's upset. The start is the beginning of the race, but not the end so we'll see. "Today it was a really exciting race".

McLaren sub Jenson Button went down the inside and upended Sauber's Pascal Wehrlein - turning him upside down into the barriers and hilariously picking up a three-place grid penalty for his next race.

The crash left Wehrlein's vehicle on its side at Portier, but he was unhurt in the crash, which required a Safety auto intervention for six laps in the closing stages. Marcus Ericsson crashed his Sauber and McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne followed suit moments later. Vettel stressed there was no plan to switch the cars at the stops prior to the race, but the suspicion in the paddock was that the victory was engineered more than it was earned.

Then, after the safety auto came out again, Russian Daniil Kvyat also lost control of his vehicle in a frantic finish.
