Death toll from Sri Lanka rains mounts to 164

Search and rescue operations continued in many parts of the island country that had been severely flooded after days of rains, which began on Friday. However, on 27 May 2017, the Government requested United Nations assistance to provide relief for the disaster-affected people through the mobilization of global technical teams for search and rescue as well as relief items.

That disaster killed more than 100 people and completely destroyed more than 500 houses, AFP reported.

Five members of the same family who were buried in a mudslide — a husband and wife and their three teenage daughters — were laid to rest in a common grave Saturday afternoon.

Following India's lead in sending out emergency relief to Sri Lanka, more countries have started pledging assistance to provide relief to the flood victims. The Department of Irrigation had issued a warning to people living in downstream in Kalutara district to evacuate with immediate effect on 28 May 2017.

In May 2003, 250 people were killed and 10,000 homes destroyed after a similarly powerful monsoon.

With more rain expected on Monday, rescuers were racing to evacuate villagers from the most vulnerable areas and emergency teams were rushing to distribute aid to almost half a million people driven out of their homes by the island's worst flooding in a decade.

The 40 tons of relief material on board INS Shardul were as per the requirement conveyed by Sri Lankan authorities, such as rice, atta (flour), dal, sugar, bed sheets, blankets, durries, rain coats, milk, biscuits, etc.

Sri Lanka's official flood death toll rose to 177 on Monday as the island sought global assistance.

Search and rescue operations are now underway, the Sri Lankan Disaster Management Center says.

The United Nations said it is donating water purification tablets, tents and other supplies for the displaced.

Sri Lanka has also sought global assistance, with India rushing a naval ship equipped with a medical team and other supplies on Saturday.

Seven districts have been severely affected, the worst of which is the coastal Kalutara, where 38 people have died and 80 people are missing.

The country's health minister said 102,218 displaced people were being sheltered in 339 relief centres and special medical teams were sent to the affected areas, with medicine taken by air to hospitals where access was cut off.
