Europe can't rely on U.S., says Merkel

Her main challenger in September, the Social Democrats' candidate Martin Schulz, doubled down on Merkel's Sunday comments, saying the summits made it clear that Trump was a president "who wants to humiliate others, who presents himself like an authoritarian ruler".

"I experienced that in the last a few days, and therefore I can only say that we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands, of course in friendship with the United States and in friendship with Great Britain and as good neighbors wherever it is possible, also with Russian Federation and also with all the other countries", Merkel said.

(Face the Nation mentioned that "some not-so-happy allies were left questioning the president's commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and a global pact on climate change" but did not mention Merkel's comments.) NY Times correspondent Binyamin Appelbaum demonstrated how comments like Merkel's could and should shape media coverage of Trump's recent visit - something the Sunday shows failed to deliver to their viewers.

Despite the Trump administration's talk of an "America first" policy and ongoing criticism of Germany for its massive trade surplus, the G-7 leaders in Sicily did vow to fight protectionism, reiterating "a commitment to keep our markets open".

The relationship between Berlin and new French President Emmanuel Macron had to be a priority, Mrs Merkel said, adding: "We Europeans have to take our destiny into our own hands".

Manchester bombing: Britain reduces threat level from critical to severe
Terror struck Monday at the end of Grande's concert at the Manchester Arena as some 20,000 fans were starting to leave. Grande is tentatively scheduled to resume the tour on June 7 at the Bercy arena in Paris.

At the Sunday event, Merkel said that Europeans would continue to work in friendship with the U.S., the United Kingdom and others wherever possible, including Russian Federation, but stressed her view that Europeans must be self-reliant, reports CNN.

She might not have welcomed Brexit or Trump. After a phone call with Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican president Peña Nieto, Trump changed his mind and said that he would be open to renegotiating the terms of NAFTA. Although relations between Washington and Europe have been strained at times since 1945, before Trump there has rarely been such a strong feeling from European leaders that they must turn away from Washington and prepare to face the world alone.

"The entire discussion about climate was very hard, if not to say very dissatisfying", she told reporters. Trip was a great success for America.

Mr Trump offered a more positive assessment on Twitter on Sunday, writing: "Just returned from Europe".

"Those who have accompanied Chancellor Merkel journalistically for a long time know how important the German-American relations are", Seibert said. "Hard work but big results!"
