Kvitova makes emotional winning comeback at French Open

Kvitova, 27, was attacked in her home in Prostejov, Czech Republic, on the morning of December 20, suffering deep cuts to all five fingers on her left hand, her dominant hand.

Indeed, just being there under a cloud-filled sky at Roland Garros was a victory for Kvitova, who needed surgery on her left hand - the one she holds her racket with - after being stabbed by an intruder in the Czech Republic in late December.

The Czech, 27, looked impressive in beating American Julia Boserup 6-3 6-2 to reach round two of the French Open.

Kvitova's parents Jiri and Pavla, her brothers Jiri and Libor, besides other family members were decked out in matching shirts while chanting "Courage, Belief, Pojd ('Come on" in Czech)' in the stands of the Court Philippe Chatrier.

Angelique Kerber became the first women's top seed in the Open era to lose in the opening round of the French Open on Sunday.

"At the end of the match, it was really tough as I knew she wouldn't give it to me - I had to win it", said Makarova, a former semi-finalist at the Australian and US Opens. This was her first match in the French Open main draw, and what a stage and an opponent to face.

"This year, I mean, the expectations are much bigger, especially in the big tournaments and the Grand Slams".

A brief rain delay early in the second set came as a surprise on another baking hot day but it did not disrupt Kvitova's rhythm.

"I didn't sleep well the days after, but I wasn't really staying alone", she said. So umpire got me really happy.

When it was over, Kvitova dropped her racket near the baseline and removed her blue headband. "After what she went through, it's incredible", Boserup said.

On the men's side, top-seeded Andy Murray, who, like Kerber, has struggled despite his ranking this year, received the most daunting first-week challenge of top players. Kvitova also provided a reassuring assessment of the conditon of her hand, saying she hadn't experienced any pain while on court.

Petra Kvitova was delighted to confirm her return to tennis at Roland Garros next week.

"So I'm really glad my big shots where there". Austrian Thiem, physically one of the hardest workers on tour and who plays as many matches as anyone, reached the final in Barcelona and Madrid, the semifinals in Rome and was a semifinalist in Paris past year. Top of the list, and still ranked No2, was three-time victor Serena Williams, now expecting her first child.

"The chances of Petra's hand healing well enough for her to be able to play tennis again were very low for multiple reasons".

"Then when the things were even better, I was, like, "Wow, the French Open is one month before".

- Boserup, who was making her third grand slam appearance, failed to match Kvitova's powerful groundstrokes and conceded the match that lasted an hour and 14 minutes.
