A campaign launched by the city's Muslim Educational Trust has so far raised more than $330,000 for the families of 53-year-old Ricky John Best and 23-year-old Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche. A third man who confronted Christian, 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher, survived the attack.

The stunned residents of Portland, Oregon have rallied around the families of two men who were brutally murdered and another who was seriously hurt while trying to help a pair of young women being harassed on a train by a man who took them for Muslims.

One of the teens is black and the other was wearing a hijab, according to reports.

Destinee Mangum, 16, told the station on Saturday that she and her 17-year-old friend were riding the train when Jeremy Christian approached them yelling what is described as hate speech.

Christian remains in custody on suspicion of two counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of intimidation and one count of being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon.

"I just want to say thank you to the people who put their life on the line for me because they didn't even know me", Mangum told reporters as tears ran down her face Saturday.

"Then they just all started arguing", Mangum told KOIN. "It was just blood everywhere and we just started running for our lives".

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who flew home from a business trip in London after learning of the attack, praised the men as "heroes" who were "all attacked because they did the right thing".

Mangum, wearing pigtails, held tightly to her mother's hand as she spoke to a KPTV reporter.

"They lost their lives because of me and my friend, and the way we looked", Mangum said.

She has since asked for privacy to give her "time to heal".

Meche earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 2016 from Reed College in Portland and landed a job with the Cadmus Group, a consulting firm in the area.

A self-identified white nationalist, Christian was caught on camera at a Portland march in April shouting racial slurs and giving a Nazi salute. At a vigil Saturday near the train station, almost 1,000 people gathered around a mound of bouquets and photographs, praising the men as heroes and saying they hoped others would stand up against hate.
