Swedish director Ostlund's 'The Square' wins Palme d'Or at Cannes

On May 28, Sofia Coppola won the Best Director prize for her film The Beguiled at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Sophia Coppola may have walked away with the prestigious festival's award for "Best Director" but Jessica Chastain and some of her fellow jurors still think there's a lot more for the film industry to catch up on. The last time it happened, the award went to Soviet director Yuliya Solntseva for her World War II film The Story of the Flaming Years - in 1961.

Joaquin Phoenix was named best actor for his portrayal of a psychologically damaged hitman in You Were Never Really Here by Lynne Ramsay, who shared the prize for best screenplay with the writers of The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou.

The French AIDS drama "120 Beats Per Minute" won the Grand Prize from the jury.

Nicole Kidman could not be there in person to receive her special award, Will Smith collected it on her behalf - doing an impersonation of her that delighted the audience. She sent a video message from Nashville saying she was "devastated" for not being present at the event.

Does that suggest a possible Palme d'Or?

But juror Jessica Chastain said she was shocked at the way numerous films she saw at Cannes portrayed women.

French director Léonor Serraille won the Camera d'Or, awarded to the best first-time filmmaker, for her intimate drama Jeune femme, while Lynne Ramsay was one of the winners in the split best screenplay category for the thriller You Were Never Really Here, which she also director. The film deals with the real-life series of racially motivated far-right terror attacks in Germany during the 2000s by the so-called NSU group (National Socialist Underground).

Nicole Kidman, who had four films in the official selection this year, including two in Competition, won the 70th Anniversary Award.

"If someone had said to me, 'You're going to be a film director, ' I would have laughed".

The actress told broadcaster Canal Plus, "We saw attractive films".

Jessica is now starring in "The Zookeeper's Wife", and spoke recently about how she enjoyed taking on roles that she felt helped blur gender norms. "We are very intent to go beyond today", Smith said.

Director Ruben Ostlund accepting his Palme d'Or award for his film The Square.

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, who chaired the jury, said the winning film was a rich and "completely contemporary" tale about "the dictatorship of being politically correct". I am sure this was not a hard decision for the jury to make. Happily posing for photos and signing autographs, the Hollywood actor got the jury and the festival giggling with his infectious humour.

That could bode ill for Bong Joon-ho's "Okja" and Noah Baumbach's "The Meyerowitz Stories", the first Netflix releases ever selected to be in competition for the Palme d'Or.
